Shar Gaden Monastery has five Preliminary Classes and seventeen classes from Khadog Karṃar ('Colour Spectrums') to Viṇāya Part II in Buddhist philosophy.
A student successfully completing all these classes in the monastery is eligible to enrol in the Gelug Board Examination.
Collected Topics, Logic, Prajṇaparamita philosophy, Madhyamika philosophy, Abhidharma, Viṇāya, Tibetan grammar, poetry, secular and religious history, painting, handwriting, English language, mathematics and memorization are compulsory subjects. Creation of maṇdalas and theory and practice of making offerings etc. are optional subjects.
There are semi-annual tests and annual examinations for the compulsory subjects. Preliminary Classes, in addition, also hold tri-annual tests.
Classes begin at 8 A.M., continue upto 11 A.M., and resume from 2 P.M. to 5 P.M. All classes from Khadog Karṃar onwards have to attend the Evening Debate Session. During that time the Preliminary Classes recite from memory the morning's portion of their memorization.
